Wonderful Mangosteen

You can tell by the newspaper the mangosteen is sitting on when this photo was taken. Yes, the mangosteen season is upon us again! The pungent durian lines the streets and whether you prefer sweet or bitter, it really doesn’t matter to me. What I love is the mangosteen that reigns supreme over the King of fruits.

It’s supposed to be really good for diabetes (the skin/rind, not the white, juicy, fleshy goodness) and helps with various allergies as well as prevents lots of diseases associated with getting older. Modern day researchers have identified dozens of biologically active xanthones in the mangosteen fruit. I don’t know or full understand the details but I do know that it has been used for thousands of years in Chinese, Aryuvedic and folk medicine in Asia.

Unfortunately, I don’t eat the red rind when I get the chance to partake. Have any of you benefitted from drinking mangosteen rind juice?

I started putting this together out of frustration with the amount of misinformation being peddled. Not wanting to be someone who further spreads the same misinformation, I do hope that you will write to let me know if something I have posted is not quite right.Lastly, I also believe that both Eastern and Western medicine have their good and bad points and everyone should try to look at things with an open mind and not blindly trust (any) authority as they have their own agenda and its not necessarily for your good.
