8 Glasses of Water- Myth?

Posted by: healthnut In: Daily Dieting Diary

A kidney specialist made a thought-provoking remark, “It is difficult to believe that evolution left us with a chronic water deficit that needs to be compensated by forcing a high fluid intake.”

He was responding to the oft-repeated mantra that we should drink 8 glasses of water a day. Someone asked what the harm was, even if the supposed benefits may not be true. His reply was funny, “well, we’ll feel guilty for one. And it could be embarrassing, if not definitely inconvenient to have to keep going to the bathroom. But seriously, I suppose the worse thing is the water may actually be polluted- and cause more damage.”

His arguments against the 8 glasses of water mantra, frankly, didn’t hold water! I think its good, especially for office bound people to keep getting up and going to the bathroom instead of sitting and risking deep vein thrombosis! Our eyes and brains need the break as well. In fact, one entrepreneur said that his secret to success is drinking lots of water because he seems to get most of his great ideas in the loo!

Lastly, the kidney specialist also conceded that drinking 8 glasses or more per day is advisable for the treatment or prevention of some diseases, such as kidney stones.

So I say, evidence or not, drink up! (Water that is)

hear hear!

i agree…drink up! your body needs it! the moment u feel thirsty…u are already slightly dehydrated and studies have shown that performance drops afterwards by up to 10%. 8 glasses is nothing…shld be ard 2L depending on your age and health.
Most dun get enuff, so there’s only good no harm at 8 glasses…unless u have a condition and are on fluid restriction…

love ur blog on nutrition and health articles

I started putting this together out of frustration with the amount of misinformation being peddled. Not wanting to be someone who further spreads the same misinformation, I do hope that you will write to let me know if something I have posted is not quite right.Lastly, I also believe that both Eastern and Western medicine have their good and bad points and everyone should try to look at things with an open mind and not blindly trust (any) authority as they have their own agenda and its not necessarily for your good.
