Walking with Style

There’s really not much gear when it comes to walking. It’s supposed to be the simplest and most injury-free of all exercises. But being the consumer oriented society we are, we need the following- if not to motivate us, at least to make us look good when we walk :D :

Sneakers – The most important item you need is a good pair of walking shoes. Your shoe salesperson will quickly point out to you that there are 100 different types of shoes- and although they can all be used for walking, shouldn’t be!

Socks – Ok, this I must say, is an important part of your gear that requires you to pay a little bit of attention. Don’t buy or use socks that you’ll have to keep pulling up as you walk. Buy those with a grip in the center portion and not with a suffocating band on the top, but a “just-nice” fit.

Clothing – Those “dry-fit” fabrics can make walking much more comfortable, especially if you sweat a lot and your clothes tend to stick to you like crazy glue after a few minutes.

Water – If you’re planning on walking for longer than 30 minutes, take some water along. You never know when you might need it.

Heart Rate Monitor – The serious walker may want to invest in his gadget that measures exertion. Wireless types are best because they give an accurate readout and are comfortable to wear. They’re comprised of a belt worn around the chest and a wristwatch display.

Pedometer – A pedometer is a device that counts your steps and/or mileage. They must be accurately adjusted to your stride length to get a good reading. They come with a variety of features. Some will even calculate calorie expenditure.

MP3 – Music can be a great motivator when all you’re doing is moving your legs with no purpose or destination.

I started putting this together out of frustration with the amount of misinformation being peddled. Not wanting to be someone who further spreads the same misinformation, I do hope that you will write to let me know if something I have posted is not quite right.Lastly, I also believe that both Eastern and Western medicine have their good and bad points and everyone should try to look at things with an open mind and not blindly trust (any) authority as they have their own agenda and its not necessarily for your good.
